AbstractA elastic-plastic, undrained, three-dimensional (3-D) Finite Difference Method(FDM) is adopted to investigate the effects of corners on lateral wall movement and ground settlement around multi-strutted deep excavations in Bangkok, Thailand. The technique as well as the numerical procedures for modeling the excavation processes was proposed using FDM program, FLACD, to assess the significance of corner constraint in typicalsized excavation. A series of convergence studies were performed in order to minimize the number of elements and nodes without sacrificing the accuracy of 3-D analysis. It was found that adequate convergence for the wall movement and ground settlement is yielded at a distance of three times excavation depth (3H) from the corner. The corner effects were studied by analyzing a typical excavation in Bangkok soft clay layers. By performing a series of parametric studies, a quantitative relationship is developed for estimating three-dimensional maximum wall deflection of an excavation based on the corresponding two-dimensional numerical results. Finally, the case of excavation, Rajavej Hospital Project (Top-Down construction), with field measurements of wall movement was estimated using above relationship. The results of analyses show excellent agreement with field measurements.
