AbstractIn a manufacturing system, whenever there is a demand expansion beyond existing production capacity, the general problem is to decide how much the capacity to be built into the system to support the demand target. This study deals with a real problem of the production system of food manufacturing facility. The specific goal is to find a machine configuration that maximizes profit within a prescribed demand expansion and time constraint. Based on information of the alternative machines from the management, the possible capacity expansion decisions are proposed and the performance measures in each alternative are evaluated. Since exact solutions for performance measure evaluation are not available, the Modified Hybrid Queuing Network Analyzer (MHQNA) with multiple product class deterministic routings, general arrival and service distribution provides estimation of parameters such as average waiting time, mean number of jobs in queue in practical setting. Results obtained from MHQNA model are used for the analysis in the capacity expansion model using integer programming. Multiple alternatives are included and evaluated. The output from the integer programming model presented the appropriate machine configuration in each demand target which performs best among the alternatives. The decision taken from this study will be helpful for the company in capacity expansion planning decision to meet the desired goal.
