AbstractConcentric Braced Frame and Friction Damper Braced Frame are two structural systems which could resist seismic loading. The following study mainly focuses on the comparison of these two systems with respect to seismic performance for Ten- story (medium rise) and Twenty- story (high rise) steel frames. The story displacement, story drift, story shear and story accelerations of the Friction Damper Braced Frames were compared with the Concentric Braced Frame. Then a best pattern to incorporate the dampers to the braced frame in order to get best performance was selected. Further Friction damper Braced Frame was compared with the Viscous Damper Braced Frame by Abeysinghe (2015) and the Viscoelastic Damper Braced Frame by Samaratunga (2015) respectively. Los Angeles California was selected as the location for this study as it is a well-known earthquake prone region in which people would be in great danger if structures are not designed to resist during major earthquakes. Three major earthquakes which occurred in this region was selected to obtain the necessary earthquake parameters for this study.
