AbstractThe transportation developments had been drastically changed over the past years in Thailand. Therefore, it needs to focus on basic road parameters to construct new road designs. It is difficult to obtain these parameters by using the traditional approaches due to the modern high traffic volume. Therefore, the Thai government wanted to use the microwave radar machine (RTMS, Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor) to obtain the road parameters (Speed, Volume, Classification) by fixing this equipment in the site. It was needed to be found out how much of error percentage is occurring by the machine, to estimate the road parameters (speed, volume, classification) for each highway type. This project was done in order to determine, how much of error percentage is occurring when the RTMS radar machine is used for each road type in the peak and off-peak time period. This thesis work is based on the performance of RTMS radar with manual-counted data for traffic parameters. Here the main intention is to focus upon the traffic characteristics such as speed, volume, and the classification. In order to analyze the behavior, five different sites were chosen and they were divided into main two types. They are namely, arterial and freeway. These arterials are also divided into three categories based on the number of lanes namely; 4-lane arterial, 6-lane arterial, and 8-lane arterial. Likewise, the freeway is also divided into two categories based on the number of lanes namely; 4-lane freeway, 8-lane freeway. These variables are met together alternatively, and tried to come up with the percentage error of the detections from the RTMS radar. These collected data is compared with the manual counted data, which is obtained by using a manual-counted method. By evaluating the error of the RTMS radar with the manual counted-data, the accuracy this RTMS radar machine was calculated.
