AbstractAn earthquake is a type of natural disaster which can devastate cities in extreme cases, where most lives are lost especially due to collapsing of structures. However modern engineering innovations has led us to making structures more safer in these conditions thus seismic resistant structures are built in regions where seismic activity is known to be high. This report contains research findings of how the cost varies upon considering seismic loading conditions in a structure in Sri Lanka that was preliminarily designed only considering gravity loads. The research only focuses on the cost variation which occur due to the variation that takes place in columns. The analysis of both the initial design and the redesign were done through ETABS software. After the structural details of the columns of the initial design were entered into the software the design was checked under both seismic and gravity load conditions. Subsequently the results were analysed and the failed columns were identified. The redesign was then done for the failed elements and the variation of material was determined. The results depicted a marginal increase of reinforcement in the elements thus the cost calculation indicated a total construction material cost increase of 0.1% with respect to the initial design. This increase of cost is significantly marginal when compared to the initial cost of construction however these values are highly subjective and depends on various parameters which varies from one location to another.
