AbstractThe study has been done to evaluate the reservoir performance of the Bhumibol dam, Thailand. Bhumibol dam was constructed to support the irrigation and hydropower sectors of the country. This study has used historical data of the reservoir from 1988-2011 and reliability, resiliency and vulnerability have been calculated. These indicators were used to show the dam’s performance over flood control, irrigation supply and the hydropower generation. In addition to these values, the economic loss due to the irrigation supply deficits, number of people uncovered due to deficit in electricity supply and the percentage increase in yearly rice production of the country if the 100% reliability in irrigation was achieved for the dam, have been evaluated using the data collected from numerous sources. It was discovered that reservoir in average is capable of achieving 22% reliability in irrigation, 70% in flood control and 29% in hydropower generation according to each failure criteria considered. A rough estimation of the irrigation deficit supply shows that dam has occurred 7000 million BHT losses each year on average and these deficits alone would contribute 9% increase in Thailand’s rice production income. The hydropower deficits each year seems to neglect nearly 34,000 of individuals in electricity supply of the dam. The results of this study can be preceded with further research studies in order to make a better performance of the reservoir and enhance the country’s economy, rice production and electricity generation capability.
