AbstractThe main purpose of this study is to develop a procedure for determining the capacity of U-Turns at un-signalized intersections on urban arterials. The data were collected at three different characteristics of U-Turns at median openings in Bangkok area, Thailand. In this study, u-turn capacity was estimated using gap acceptance model developed by Harders which was described in HCM 2000. The estimated capacity using the model was validated with the field capacity using the method from Kyte’s research. The critical headway was determined using maximum likelihood method, while the follow-up time was estimated directly from the field using the definition in HCM 2000. The result showed that, even the estimated capacity was overestimated the field capacity but the percentage of MAPE are less than 2% so the gap acceptance model is applicable. The results also demonstrated that the capacity of U-turns was affected by the conflicting traffic flow and the width of median openings. This study also verified that the Harders model is reliable in evaluation of u-turns capacity at median openings.
