AbstractThis paper presents an investigation into the response of a blast absorbent sandwich panel. The core material of the sandwich panel is round thin-walled mild steel tubes. Two tube configurations are identified, one being perforated steel tubes and the other one being non-perforated steel tubes. Individual pipes were tested for radial compression in order to find out the loading range for the bearing test. Bearing test for sandwich panels were then carried out to investigate the energy absorption capacity of the panels, along with the stiffness and ductility ratio with different core tube configurations. Results show that the energy absorption capacity of the perforated tubed core panel is greater than the non-perforated tubed core panel due to its high ductility ratio. Initial stiffness of the perforated tubed core panel was higher than the non-perforated tubed core panel however the stiffness becomes similar after a while.
