Abstract | Safety measures used by motorbike riders remain low other than the usage of helmets in Sri Lanka. Even though riders used safety measures they haven’t used them in a proper way. Therefore, this study examined about the wearing pattern of safety measures and effectiveness of safety measures used by motorbike riders. Data was collected by interviewing surveys and roadside observations. Surveying locations were selected to cover the rural, urban and sub urban areas in Anuradhapura district, Sri Lanka. Altogether, 3500 bikes were observed and 200 motorbike users were interviewed. Significant finding of this research study was that even though there were ninety nine percent (99%) of the motorbike riders used helmets, the effective helmet wearing is only seventeen point four percent (17.4%). Therefore, there is an immediate need of motivational and awareness programs for persuading people to wear safety equipment in a proper manner in Sri Lanka. Moreover, further research studies are needed to investigate the reasons for low effective safety measures used by motorbike riders. |
