AbstractBitcoin is a new digital currency with features of fast-transfer, universal payment, decentralized nature and independent from government. The use of Bitcoin is increasing worldwide and has the possibility of being a disruptive technology in payment system. The assessment of Bitcoin situation in Thailand was unknown and the research provides an overall view of Bitcoin in Thailand. This study aims to identify challenges and opportunities of implementing Bitcoin in Thailand. A qualitative research was conducted through open ended, semi-structure in depth interviews with different groups of respondents to identify the problems in their level. Groups of Bitcoin miners, users and expert were interviewed to understand the status, challenges, opportunities and recommendations for the improvements in Bitcoin in Thailand.It is found that: Bitcoin has several challenges in Thailand; unclear government, hacking risks, local culture and price volatility are some of the difficulties involved in Bitcoin trading. Though speculative use of Bitcoin is primary use in Thailand. The miners being a essential part of Bitcoin faces problems of high temperature and unavailability of hardware in Thailand. Apart of the challenges and risks, Bitcoin also has immense possibility in being a alternative currency.
