AbstractBefore 1988, Lao's economy and market were practically closed and exclusively centrallyplanned. Since then, the Lao Government enacted many laws to promote business and foreign investment within the new open door policy. As a result, the economy of Lao PDR has changed significantly. The total capital investment reaches US$ 6.9 billion in December 1998. One of the favorable type of foreign investment is joint venture. In doing business under this form, several companies have been successfully. However, some of the joint ventures companies are facing problems and difficulties in operation, which will influence future foreign investment in the Lao PDR. This study attempts to identify the success factors of joint venture in the Lao PDR. It will analyze the criteria in both partner selection and negotiation stages, and concentrate to the management in joint venture after its establishment. Through the discussion with related people, the causes leading to breaking up of joint ventures will be also identified. Based on output of analysis, some recommendations will be made to avoid failure m operation and help joint venture to be successfully in the Lao PDR .
