AbstractIn this plant, many loads are always sensitive to harmonic distortions and voltage flickers, for example, arc furnace, rolling mills etc. Those could cause increasing of motor losses and heating in electrical equipment. Transformers, switchgear, and capacitors may experience excessive heating. Moreover, fuses, protective relays, metering devices and power electronic equipment could have misoperations due to harmonics and voltage flickers. This study aims to investigate the harmonic distortion level and voltage flicker at BSI steel company. Field measurements were conducted to evaluate the present status, to model the systems, and to simulate these models that lead to the solutions for their existing problems. Two software, HI_ WA VE and EMTDC were employed for modeling and simulation. HI WA VE simulation program is used in simulation of the harmonic dist01tion. Results obtained were compared with the field measurement. Five cases were investigated, namely, during arc furnace operation, during arc furnace off operation, effect of existing capacitor bank, proliferation of arc furnace and desired filter. The results show that arc furnace is the largest harmonic level as compared to the other loads. Capacitor bank installed in arc furnace line could also increase the harmonic distortion level. Two filters installed on feeder at one of the rolling mills and arc furnace could attenuate the harmonic distortion. EMTDC program is used for model and simulation of the arc furnace. Thus its voltage flickers could be evaluated for difference arc furnace. To solve these voltage flickers, two techniques (insertion of impedance) based on compensation method were introduced.
