AbstractThis study attempted to identify the various features of Korean manufacturing subsidiaries in Thailand. It tried to assess their firm-specific advantages, locational advantages, and internalization advantages. It was found that there were two major motivations. One motivation was cost reduction and survival for labor-intensive businesses. Another was globalization for large companies. The companies that combined their ownership advantages optimally with the' locational advantages of host country performed well. The launch of the Korean subsidiaries caused the reduction of parent companies' factory workers and a bad impact to suppliers. The financial crisis in host country affected Korean subsidiaries' business adversely or favorably. Some of them changed their target market from host country to third country market.
