AbstractIn recent years, numerous types of earthquake resisting building design methods have been developed to reduce the impacts of the strong earthquake loads. In this research proposed the new concept of tension gripping device for steel brace in moment resisting frames building. This newly developed tension gripping jaw was gripped the brace, when frames are subject to the tension force and the device was released the brace, when frame subjected to the compression force. The conventional brace dissipates considerable energy by yielding under tension, but buckle without dissipating much energy in compression. In conventional brace with new device can be resist the buckling effect. Investigate the behaviour of the tension gripping jaw using a universal testing machine experimental. In the experiment only one energy dissipating device was used. Based on the experimental results illustrate the device only takes tension force and released compression force. When assumes that two energy dissipating devices are connected as a cross brace system, one device grip tension and another one release the compression force. Then after change the direction of the loading, completed the energy dissipation graph. According to the results conclude that tension gripping device can use as a more economical and effective energy dissipation device for steel brace in moment resisting frames.
