AbstractA multi-layers mathematical model to simulate the vertical distribution pattern of water quality state variables including salinity, phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus, chlorophyll-a, inorganic nutrient, and dissolved oxygen in stratified marine waters was described. The model is divided into two parts: one is the eutrophication model, which is modified from the MIKE21 eutrophication system, the other is the salinity model used to model the advection-diffusion between layers. The model is implemented using a dynamics simulation model VisSim 3.0. The results from the developed model show that the vertical distribution of salinity have a relation associated with the stratified layer. The salinity is increase sharply at the interface of stratified layer. The multi-layer eutrophication model is not complete because of a limiting of time. The simple two layers model is recommended to developed further and test with the observed data and can then increase complexity by adding more layers to the model.
