AbstractCalifornia is a well-known earthquake prone region in which thousands of earthquakes could be experienced per year where large amounts of damage with respect to loss of life and also economically takes place. The present-day practice in the field of construction is to use concentrically braced frames in regions of seismic activity. In concentrically braced frames energy is dissipated by buckling of the brace and also brace yielding in seismic loading, which in term means that plastic deformation takes place and high maintenance would require. Relatively by the use of viscoelastic damping systems there would be a reduction in the structure maintenance due to its deformity in course of a seismic activity. The following study was conducted to confirm this statement, to find out a suitable pattern to add viscoelastic dampers to a medium- rise and high- rise building with better performance and additionally as part of this study the viscoelastic damper will be compared with the friction damping system and viscous damping system.
