AbstractBatch experimental investigation was carried out by using a laboratory scale UASB reactor and operated continuously at ambient temperature. The reactor was inoculated with sludge (VSS concentration of about 23,000 mg/L) from a previous UASB reactor, which treated wastewater containing cyanide and stored for about four months. Synthetic wastewater was used as raw wastewater with organic loading (OLR) in a range of 3-19 kg COD/mr3 .d and a cyanide concentration in a range of 0-7 mg/L. The reactor was operated with upflow velocity in a range of 0.1-0.16 m/hr. The startup phase of the reactor was lasted for 42 days. The reactor was found to be feasible alternative for the treatment of wastewater containing CN concentration up to 7 mg/l (cyanide loading rate of 0.017 kg-CN-/m? .d) without affecting the COD removal. The cyanide removal efficiency was higher than 75-80 % at operation parameters of upflow velocity of 0.16 m/hr, OLR of about 5.5 kg-CO Dim? .d and recirculation ratio of about 10: 1.
