AbstractEutrophication and dissolved oxygen models are set up for the West Lake, the largest lake in Hanoi, to estimate the water quality and evaluate restoration measures. Phytoplankton and benthic vegetation growth reaches the maximum in summer due to high intensity of light, while the oxygen concentration reaches lowest values due to high consumption and low oxygen saturation. Diurnal variations of dissolved oxygen also are modelled. Diurnal changes are highest in summer during phytoplankton bloom and low from late autumn to early spring. The dissolved oxygen levels deplete to below 2 g/m3 at night during highest phytoplankton bloom. With reductions of external nutrient input, the inorganic phosphorus decreases and this significantly improves the water quality in the lake. The models can be applied to estimate water quality of the lake. However, more data for model calibration are needed to make the models better.
