Abstract | China is the biggest steel producer and consumer in the world. Yet most of its products are low end products. The industry lacks high value-added products for sustainable development. Efficient innovation management is urgently needed in the industry. In this study, a normative framework was developed based on literature review to assess pattern and characteristics of technological innovation in iron and steel industry based on analysis of four innovation cases in Handan iron and Steel Group Co. Ltd. (HISG). It is found that iron and steel industry in China basically use cost minimization strategy, which is through increasing production volume and productivity. Process innovation is paid more attention in this industry compared with product innovation as it reduces manufacturing costs and brings more economic benefit. Top management focuses on process modernization and enlarges product capacity, yet neglect long-term sustainable development, which is based on high value-added products. The output of process innovations are usually both technically and commercially successful. But most of product innovations are technically successful, yet commercially unsuccessful, due to top management value and poor evaluation criteria for innovation performance. Finally, the author gave some suggestions to help managers conduct innovation management in a more systematic way in the areas of enhancing environmental scanning, identifying internal capabilities, and long term planning for technological road map. |
