Abstract | The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the fundamental question of how uncertainty is managed through Technology Roadmapping (TRM). The study presents an overview of the previous literature on the uncertainty and TRM. As the focus of the study is from the Value Added Network Services (VANS) providers' perspective, the study presents a brief overview of this industry as well. There are two different generalization approaches, sampling - logic, which results in statistical generalization, and replication logic, which results in analytic generalization. When using sampling logic, one has to have a number of cases in order to be able to have statistically significant results, and generalizations are inferred using various measures for statistical significance. Replication logic, which is the basis for a case study research, focuses on finding cases which predict similar results, or produces contrary results, but with predictable reasons. Then, analytic generalization is used for building the model from study. The second approach is used for the purpose of this study. Based on the literature study, a model of uncertainty management through TRM process is outlined. Five judges giving new ideas scrutinize the model. This model is the basis for the construction of the questionnaire. The case company in Finland is the basis for testing the model and using the feedback from the business managers through a workshop. Then a final model is recommended for the case company. The same study is extended to a case company in Nepal. Taking into consideration of the difference in the operating environment, only the implications are derived for the case company in Nepal. This is a proprietary study. Therefore, for any kind of reproduction or use otherwise, prior permission of the concerned authority is requested. |
