Abstract | Funafuti coastal zone plays a very important role in the livelihood of the local people. It coastal resources are very limited and can only support a small size population. Its environment is highly fragile and vulnerable to external pressures, generated by natural factor and human activities. The island is currently undergoing transitional change in the physical feature of its coastline, due to coastal zone development activities, such boat channel, wharf, slip-way, removal of sand and aggregates from the foreshore of the study area. Being the most developed island in the country, urban drift is the major problem that associated with its population growth. The present situation is recognized by local people to be deteriorating and natural resources available on land are becoming scarce. Its fisheries resources in the coastal, inshore and lagoon areas are depleting due to increase fishing activities at household level for economic gain and household consumption. Influx of modem technology into the island poses environmental concern, in view of their present rate of proliferation on the island. The study specifically shows what the local people perceived on the status of coastal resources in the study area. In the case of sand, aggregate and firewood the situation is not satisfactory. In regard to fisheries resources, there is a need to regulate inshore, lagoon and coastal resources, in terms of their sizes, weights, and types of equipment to be use and number of fishing boats on the island. The study also shows that there is a need to have a more transparent management framework, where local people's participation is encouraged. Based on these findings, a number of recommendations were made for consideration and to be undertaken toward the proper management of coastal zone resources. This will ensure their sustainability and minimization of coastal zone degradation. |
