AbstractThe main purpose of this study is to do the work of initial stage, which is to develop a prototype for an intelligent walking stick that can navigate blind or partially sighted people, by means of a multi-sensor based approach to detect obstacles along the path. This study is divided into three parts: sensor evaluation and selection, matching and depth recovery algorithms design and implementation with selected sensor module and micro controller. Two kinds of sensors and several range image measurement methods are compared. A matching algorithm is implemented and given the matching points pair from stereo images. Two kinds of depth recove1y methods are developed. Implementation of this methodology is demonstrated by recovering the depth from stereo images taken by single camera. Conclusion and recommendations are given based on experimental results.
