AbstractWater is one of the basic biological needs of man and because of this, the availability of safe water is one of people's main concerns. It is not only essential but is also required in adequate qualities of proper growth of any community. Cambodia has a huge number of abundant water resources, which located in the path of Mekong River, Great Lake Tonie Sap and underground water. Despite the abundant of water resources, access to potable water and environmental sanitation facilities is limited. Most people in rural areas rely on indiscriminate and often highly contaminated surface water from pond, lakes, river, canals etc. This study deals with the existing situations of domestic rural water supply in Kampong Tralach district of Kampong Chhnang province, Cambodia which has been implemented by PRASAC Project. The extent of people's participation in planning aspects and their willingness to be involved in the scheme have been explored. Benefits and effects of the domestic rural water supply were assessed in terms of health, social and economic benefits. The people's participation is very essential process that made local people to have a better standard of living. It is very important to organize people in the form of the Water User Group (WUG) which becomes more sustainable and will achieve the development goal for their own community in a long run. The study found out that people tended to contribute their resources to the project implementation when they had participated in the formulation and decision-making stage. Several problems and constraints were found in organizing a domestic rural water supply system. These included the tack of technical know-how, the sho1iage of capital, the inadequate skilled personnel, the poor coordination and the lack of willingness for a selfsupporting system. A set of recommendations have been given to improve the conditions of the domestic rural water supply situation in the study area in future.
