Abstract | An existing axis-symmetric creep closure computer algorithm using the hyperbolic creep law for circular tunnels (Phienwej, 1987) is modified to incorporate the power creep law. Effect of various types of supports in accordance with convergence-confinement method given by Hoek and Brown (1980) is incorporated in the analysis. Location of support installation with respect to the tunnel face is considered as well. From the study, the hyperbolic creep law is found to be more practical than the power creep law because the former allows for yielding of the ground with increase in time step when large value of Rf (0.90 - 0.99) is used. A parametric study is performed using the hyperbolic law and the results are discussed. Predicted convergence was compared with the monitored convergence data of a number of tunnels and was found in good agreement. Moreover, it is found that the convergence and support yielding time are most sensitive to hyperbolic parameter Eu/(1-3)f and creep parameter . The values of Eu/(1-3)f equal (200 - 250) and equal (0.03 - 0.115) predict the convergence well. The analysis will be useful in predicting time-dependent convergence and support load for tunnels in both rock and soil. |
