AbstractThis study suggests a methodology of dete1mining the operating configuration for a manufacturing system so it can have a desirable performance (throughput) while utilizing the resources efficiently. The methodology starts by using simulation to generate relevant values that represent the behavior of the manufacturing system. The behavior of the system will then be examined from the point of view of Theory of Constraints. The focuses of Theory of Constraints in this study are mainly bottleneck determination and system improvement. By judging from the values generated by simulation, the location of the bottleneck operation can be determined. Modification on the operating configuration of the bottleneck operation is then made in hope to improve the performance of the whole manufacturing system. The process of evaluating the system and then making modification will repeat until a desired performance is obtained. This methodology can be applied to any system with an assembly line or flow-shop structure. The methodology is applied to two hypothetical manufacturing systems as examples. One of the hypothetical manufacturing system has an assembly line structure and the other hypothetical manufacturing system has a flow-shop stmcture. In both examples, the methodology has successfully determined the appropriate operating configuration for obtaining the target throughput.
