AbstractThe purpose of this research is two-fold. The first objective is to study primary and secondary economic benefits of tourism industry. The second objective is to evaluate the contribution of tourism to the Thai economy by using input-output methodology. This study evaluate the economic contributions in three major categories; income, employment, and balance of payments From this research we found that the tourism industry has made important contribution to the overall growth of the Thai economy. Tourism increased the country's income, employment, and the foreign exchange earnings. The analysis was carried out using multiplier obtained from the input-output table, namely, income multiplier, employment multiplier, and data analysis. From the study, Tourism was found to contribute 2.01 percent to the national household income and 13.74 percent to the national employment. The tourism import content was around 23.66 percent. So, except for agriculture product, tourism provides the highest percentage contribution to GNP when compared to the major Thailand export industry. Finally, Thailand input-output method is evaluated to assess the relevance, coverage, efficiency, accuracy, and transferability. Results of the study can provide useful information to government, tourism bureau, and other local tourism authority for planning and developing tourism destination in an effective and efficient way.
