Abstract | Increasing attention has been paid to ecological considerations worldwide over the past few years. In developing countries, firm's myopia concerning profit tends to recognize pollution control as an unnecessary evil. However, it has been proved that environmental protection measures yield significant economic and social benefits not only in respect of improvements in mortality or morbidity rates and improvement in working conditions, but also in such specific areas as the productivity and profitability of investment, technological innovations, resource consumption/output ratio in energy use and increased amenities. Industrial environment management is a prime partner in development and implementation of programs for the abatement of pollution. Tannery and leather finishing industry is one of the most polluting industries in Bangladesh. Almost all of these industries are located near the banks of natural streams or in the industrial belt around the city suburbs. This locational pattern has obviously arisen from the ease of discharge of the effluents. Unfortunately these industries drain their effluent in most cases without any form of treatment into the nearby river. Since river water is largely being used for drinking, washing, irrigation and fisheries, pollution has adverse economical, environmental and human health effects. Gaseous emissions and disposal of solid and hazardous wastes are also becoming of increasing concern considering public health risks through contamination of air and ground water resources and solid wastes acting as a breeding ground for disease causing vectors. The purpose of this research study is to develop a framework in view of Environmental Management System (EMS). Acting in conformity with such a model will enable the tanneries in Bangladesh to address environmental issues actively and coherently so that it renders beneficial ecologically as well as economically. Besides, the policy and institutional involvement needed for implementation of such program is also clarified. |
