Effect of terrain types and height variations on reuse factor in cellular network planning

AbstractThis study presents how topography (terrain height) and morphography (terrain type) variations effect the frequency reuse factor in macrocellular mobile communications environment. To determine these influences, the terrain information are developed, in the form of digital maps, as much realistic as possible. We mainly focus on three terrain types that are urban, suburban and open areas. Terrain heights are assumed to be hilly terrain. In addition, traffic densities are assigned according to the terrain types. The planning is done by planning processes which are capacity plan, coverage plan and frequency allocation plan. This consideration is based on Okumura-Hata model for path loss calculation and the results is obtained by using the NPS/X, the Nokia cellular network planning tool. It is observed that when we increase terrain height, compared with equal terrain height, the reuse factor tends to increase. In turn, when decreasing terrain height the reuse factor tends to decrease. But with separate areas taken as urban, suburban and open area, we find that when increase terrain height the reuse factor tends to decrease. Furthermore, when reduce terrain height, the reuse factor tends to increase. So without detailed analysis of path loss component, we cannot conclude the effect of terrain types and height variation on reuse factor.
