AbstractThis research presents the performance of a new coding scheme proposed recently for high data rate wireless communications. This coding scheme is called space-time coded modulation (STCM) with a combination of coding, modulation and diversity technologies. In this study encoded data is split into 2 streams to be simultaneously transmitted employing 2 transmit antennas and received by one antenna. A four-state QPSK STCM is analyzed. It is assumed that the channel model can be modeled by a 2-tap delay and without Doppler effect. The uncorrelated fading coefficients and ideal channel state information (CSI) are considered. The main objective was to use STCM with equalizers in this channel. One soft-output equalizer, suboptimum soft-output equalizer (SSE) and one hard-output equalizer, Viterbi equalizer (VE) are discussed. A high coding gain can be achieved with a concatenated coding scheme at moderate complexity. Reed Solomon (RS) block coding is used as the outer code for this purpose. The simulation results show that the error performance of STCM scheme with VE is worse than uncoded-QPSK, and the STCM scheme with SSE has excellent performance compared with STCM-VE and uncoded-QPSK. Thus a suitably designed STCM-SSE scheme is expected to perform well in the fading channel. The simulation result for RS STCM scheme shows that at BER level of 10-3, a coding gain of 3 dB can be achieved.
