Abstract | In GPS navigation, users usually obtain their positions and clock biases from four visible satellites. The selection of these four satellites has a great influence on the accuracy of a navigation fix. The degree of this influence is well represented by DOP (Dilution of Precision). The DOP depends directly on the geometrical shape of the orbital position of the four visible satellites and the location of the GPS receiver. Typically the smaller DOP values are the better accuracy obtained from position determination. GPS has 24 satellites and provide 6-12 visible satellites above the horizon to any user in the world at any time. The GDOP (Geometric Dilution of Precision) parameters are computed for all combination of four satellites taken from the visible satellites. Then the combination, which gives the smallest GDOP, is selected. This research study presents a model applicable to predict the position accuracy behavior at any location around the world in case of the standalone GPS constellation and then propose some modification by mixing the existing LEO system (IRIDIUM, GLOBALSTAR) operating as GPS satellite to study the possibility of position accuracy improvement. |
