AbstractThis research study is an attempt to find out the emerging bond market of Sri Lanka. The bond market of Sri Lanka started in 1996 with Vanik Incorporation, a leading Investment Bank of Sri Lanka issuing debentures to the public. Debentures, has become an important vehicle to raise money for long term capital requirements due to the volatility of the stock market and fluctuating interest rates. Also efficient financial market needs other saving and investment modes other than bank and stock market. Thus, bond market plays an important role in the financial market by raising funds for investments and thereby stabilizing the financial system of Sri Lanka as it provides long term funds to businesses at less cost compared to bank funds and equity. It also assures a fixed and steady return for the investors. However bond market of Sri Lanka is still in a very primary stage when compared to other financial markets in Asia such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia. And all most all institutions and personnel connected to this area are going through a learning process. The rules & regulations, systems, procedures are all still being evaluated and implemented. Thus weaknesses and shortcomings are many. This research would cover the areas such as structure of bond market i.e. primary & secondary bond market of Sri Lanka, recent bond issues, role of regulatory authorities, the impact of financial policy on bond market etc. Further, this study would analyze the emerging bond market of Sri Lanka with a help of a model developed by the researcher i.e. " Model for an efficient bond market". Based on this model, impeding factors to the development of bond market would be analyzed and discussed. Finally recommendations will be drawn in order to improve the bond market of Sri Lanka and thereby to use the limited financial resources in the most productive manner.
