AbstractFrom its origins in host-based systems, distributed computing has evolved through many stages of development. In recent times, the client/server approach has become the de facto solution for many companies implementing networked applications. Now, mobile agent programming promises to shape the next generation of distributed computing systems. It's advantages over traditional methods include communication pe1formance , load balancing, real-time interactivity, increased fault-tolerance, service customization, and autonomy. However, mobile agent programming is not without its detractors, who mostly point to its inherent security risk as its singular most serious drawback .. The aim of this research is to design and implement a programming framework to prove that it is possible to develop secure applications using the mobile agent paradigm. This framework abstracts the generic functionality of a mobile agent-based system while performing the tasks and services necessary to secure the system from potential attacks. The final prototype allows the application programmer to build on the extensible parts of the system while the underlying security features operate transparently. Its primary mechanisms are a challenge-based authentication protocol, a proxy-based resource access procedure, and an implementation of protection domains for containing agent execution.
