AbstractRadio spectrum is an important natural resource that should be used efficiently. Radio spectrum management refers to the administrative and technical procedures necessary to ensure the efficient operation of radio communication services without causing harmful interference. The key to spectrum management is the frequency assignment problem, where frequency channels must be assigned to transmitters while minimizing bandwidth and keeping interference to acceptable levels. In this thesis work frequency assignment problem is modeled as graph coloring formulation. Two search algorithms namely sequential algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm are applied in an integrated form to graph coloring formulation and the spectral requirement and assignment plan for a given FDMA service are obtained. An initial assignment is generated by sequential algorithm that is improved by simulated annealing algorithm for the same set of constraints. Three different cases for Philadelphia problem data sets, both for homogenous and non-homogenous networks, are tested and the results are compared with already existing results in the literature. It is found that the results obtained from this methodology outperforms those obtained by other algorithms for the three cases of Philadelphia problem data set and the span obtained is minimum of all. More over it is also found that simulated annealing algorithm not only reduces the spectral requirement obtained from sequential algorithm but also increases various performance measures.
