Abstract | The study aims to review the current status and trends of indigenous fisheries resources in Southern part of the Lao PDR. It combines e review of the results of a number of recent research project, with a limited survey of fishing households in two villages in Khong district carried out in April 2000. It focuses in particular on evidence for the decline in the fishing and attempts made, particularly by the Indigenous Fisheries Development and Management project to establish Fishery Conservation Zones as a measure to maintain the trial fishery. The fishery in the survey villages is revealed to be concentrated in _the month of December to April, although there are marked difference the two villages. Fishing is overall the most important occupation in the villages, although it is only one part of a wider livelihood system. However fish is a major protein source, being consumed as the main animal protein at almost 80% of meals. Villagers have observed major variations in the fishery in recent years and the fishery has become more market oriented with between one third and one half of the catch now being marketed. Evidence for the decline and disappearance of some species is presented. Fisheries Conservation Zones established in both villages are appreciated by villagers as a means to preserve fish stock. It is noted that such effects require participation of both the local populations and government officials, particularly in re-introducing broodstoock into the fishing grounds. However, it is noted that understanding of the varied ecological contexts is required and this needs both scientific study and use of local people's knowledge |
