Abstract | Document Information system (DIS) is an essential requirement for any organization, since it helps offer a quick access to all documents. Many academia and industries are using DIS to create, store and distribute their information on the Web. This study proposes a practical methodology for developing an XML-based (eXtensible Markup Language) DIS. The structure of an XML document is designed and represented in terms of Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, which will then be translated into Document Type Definition (DTD). All the necessary information is stored as a document in an XML format. eXtensible Query Language (XQL) is used to query these documents. XQL includes special expressions or syntax for query process and provides searching mechanism based on its meta-information. The GMD-IPSI query engine, which supports XQL expression, is used in system implementation to ease the query development process. Development of a DIS for Policy and Procedure Statement of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is employed as a case study in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. |
