AbstractThis study presents the communication standard architecture of Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) to control a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). This study uses the Part 1 and Part 2 of the MMS standard to control FMS. The Part 1 and Part 2 are referred to as the "core" of MMS standard. This study develops a hierarchical modeling and computer control design technique for a FMS based on MMS. The FMS is modelled using recursive processes in graphical topdown design. The computer control is performed using MMS technique that preserves system modularity and integrity. Further, the development of the application layer software of MMS based on OSI seven layer standard was successfully tested between client computer and server computer to control NCPC TB400 3-axis milling machine over the WindowsNT platform. As Internet Protocols (IP) are wide spread de facto standards, the implementation of MMS layer over the TCP/IP stack is a practical and an important issue.
