AbstractSince the implementation of open door polices in 1992, more foreign companies have been set up either as joint ventures or fully foreign-owned enterprises in Nepal. It is in this context that joint ventures in Nepal are rapidly on the increase, through they are relatively still a new phenomena in the Nepalese industry. However some of the joint ventures have many problems and numbers of them are already closed down due to various reasons. In such a condition it is vital for companies to fully aware of the success factors and performance improvement of joint ventures in Nepal. Based on a comprehensive literature review of success factors in establishment and operating joint ventures, an analytical framework has been devised for analyzing the success factors and performance issues associated with joint ventures in Nepal. Further, a structured questionnaire has been developed based upon the framework for collecting field data to study the relevance of issues stated in the framework. In this research, an attempt has been made to find out what exactly are the success factors that leads to better performance of joint ventures in Nepal. The analysis has done on all the three process steps of joint ventures, which are partner selection, negotiation and management. According to the findings of this research key success factors for Nepalese partner is to gain as much as managerial and technical resources from foreign partner, valuation of existing facilities and cross-cultural management. On the other hand key success factors for foreign partners are political contact of partner, ability of marketing and distribution network of local partner, customer service and foreign exchange management. Success factors for both partners are effective communication between parties, quality of local personnel and development of local managers. Some recommendations to foreign and local investors have been suggested to facilitate successful joint venture establishment and operations in Nepal.
