AbstractThe project undertaken as part of this research describes an object-oriented modelling system that has been developed for the simulation of the Tools and Die manufacturing system at BMW AG. The study emerged as an outcome of the intent of the Strategic-Planning department of the Tools and Die Division to find and implant 'the best practice' in Tools manufacturing. This research investigates the existing Tools and Die production-planning problems and possible solution methodologies. Simultaneously, a review of analytical tools is made and based on the requirements, simulation is chosen as the preferred analysis tool. A conceptual simulation model was designed and, input and process-related data for the operations was collected. An extensible conceptual framework for model development was made which permitted the integration of an object-oriented approach. The design and implementation of the object-oriented, data-driven model was carried out in SiMPLE++ wherein a new reverse simulation technique was developed. The flexible system has three basic outputs - production lead-times, production schedules and bottleneck reports. Particular emphasis has been laid upon the logic underlying the model and its utilisation in making dynamic evaluations of the production system. As an outcome of this research, conclusions were drawn not only for BMW but also for the simulation process itself. The recommendations made were forwarded to the company, which now plans to embed the simulation system in a larger strategic and operations planning system.
