Abstract | Bamboo is important raw material in pulp and paper industry in many tropical countries. Nowadays, the trend moving to use plantation hardwood is increasing, especially, eucalyptus is getting more and more attention. This study was investigated the optimization of oxygen delignification and ECF bleaching with the sequence D-EO-D-E-D to a brightness of 88-90% ISO of soda-AQ bamboo and eucalyptus pulps. The results were compared to bamboo and eucalyptus kraft pulps. An acidic treatment stage before bleaching was also carried out for soda-AQ pulps to investigate the improvement of bleachability of the pulps. There was no major difference in response to the oxygen stage between soda-AQ and kraft pulps but the soda-AQ pulps were lower response to bleaching compared to kraft pulps. The brightness of 88-89% ISO was achieved but the optimum kappa factor was surprisingly high both for bamboo and eucalyptus pulps. An acidic treatment stage reduced chlorine dioxide consumption, especially in case of eucalyptus pulp. The viscosity and yield of the bleached pulps with acidic treatment were only slightly lower than those of the bleached pulps without acidic treatment. Soda-AQ pulps were almost comparable to kraft pulps in strength and optical properties, except tear strength of bamboo soda-AQ pulp suffered markedly. The calculated production costs of soda-AQ pulps are higher compared to kraft pulps mainly due to the cost of anthraquinone in cooking and higher chlorine dioxide consumption in bleaching. |
