Abstract | The aim of this thesis was to use jute plant as a main raw material for fine paper and board making. To fulfill the target efficiently two pulping processes, chemical and semichemical pulping were selected for jute fiber and jute stick respectively. Sun dried jute fiber and jute sticks were collected from Shibpur area, Narsingdi District, Bangladesh. Jute bast fiber was cooked by soda process with different H-factor and a wide range of chemical charge (6-20)%. Bleaching sequence followed was Do-E-D1-D2. Pulp was refined to different beating degrees. Handsheet properties, both mechanical and optical were measured and compared among themselves and with those of standard wood and nonwood properties. Jute sticks were cooked by semichemical pulping process, cooking conditions were followed as rising time 30 min, cooking time 2 hr and cooking temp 95°C and chemical charge as (6- 18) % EA. Important board properties were measured and compared with those of some standard boards. A fibre morphology study was also done in this project. The hollocellulose and lignin were determined both for bast fibre and stick. The results can be summarized as follows: I. Jute bast fibres was cooked with a low alkali charge of (I 0 to 12) % to the Kappa number of about 15, with the yield of 65% and with a high viscosity. 2. Unbleached jute soda AQ pulp in the kappa number range of 13 to 20 was fairly easy to bleach with the four stages sequence of Do- E- D1- D2 to the brightness of (85 to 89) % ISO, with a high viscosity level (1000 ml/g). The total production yield would be about 60%, which is exceptionally high. 3. Beatability of unbleached soda pulp was good and strength values achieved exceptionally high. 4. Jute sticks could be utilised as semichemical pulp in the production of corrugating medium. This part of the study was rather limited and the optimum conditions of cooking and the quality to be achieved could not be given because laboratory refining at PPT was not representative. However, very probably the yield would be (75 to 80) % with a low chemical charge and the quality (RCT) competitive. |
