Abstract | Filler is the main additives needed for fine paper to improve opacity and printability. Due to its low price, the high amount of filler retained also reduces production costs and amount of fiber required. The retention aids play a vital role to increase the filler content within the paper. The effects of retention aids on filler retention, paper properties, and productivity were investigated, and the study finally provided the optimum ranges of chemical dosages for applying microparticle based retention systems to fine paper making. Three microparticle based aids including two commonly used ones and a novel aid were involve in the study. Those aids with varied dosages were added into a pulp stock in the Dynamic Drainage Jar from which the handsheets were made. The finished handsheets were tested an amount of filler retained, water resistance as a result of sizing retention, and formation index. Drainage was also examined by freeness tester. The optimum ranges of chemical dosage were determined by combined three dimensional graphs of each property. |
