Abstract | Z- direction strength is very important in the behavior of the paper surface due to poor bonding strength results in delamination or splitting or peeling of the paper which is the cause of the poor runnability of printing machine and also poor printability for fine paper. Advance Agro Public Company Limited (AA) is suffering from this problem. The z direction strength of AA's paper is only 200 J/m 2 . The acceptance level should be around 400 J/m 2 • The objectives of this study are to improve the z-direction strength by separated refining in both laboratory refiner (PFI mill) and AA's refiner and mixed refining in PFI mill too. Both bleached kraft long fiber (Modo Kraft Brand) and bleached kraft short fiber (Eucalyptus Camadulensis) were used as raw material. The furnish combination is 15 percent for long fiber and 85 percent for short fiber. Refining by using PFI mill both separated and mixed refining give very good strength development to the fiber while the tear index is not suffered so much. Refining by using double disk refiner for both low and high SEL give less strength development than PFI mill. Refining by using double disk refiner at low SEL gives better strength development than refining at high SEL. Anyhow refining by using double disk refiner is the only one way for improving the z direction strength while the tear strength is not suffered too much, still higher than the target of the company. High tear index is quite important because it gives good runnability. |
