Abstract | In global business today firms are increasingly attempting to diversi fy products and technologies in order to earn large profits, expand businesses, and survive on global market competing with other giants. To diversify products and technologies, they require varied knowledge and technologies. Sometimes, it requires that they have interdisciplinary knowledge or fresh knowledge. However, firms experience high costs of innovating knowledge, quick obsolescence of any product or technology, sho1iened product-concept-to-market cycle time, and lack of skills in the fields required for any complete interdisciplinary product. That is why, firms forge strategic alliances to get access to new or specialist technology, to optimize costs of production, to speed to market, and to reduce inherent risk of falling behind. In this contribution, the effort is rendered to depict the motives for forging strategic alliances in different types of firms, to show that technology and knowledge may transfer from one entity to another through alliances, and to determine the hindering factors of technology transfer through alliances. This research is a study on the transfer of technology at the firm level considering the alliances among firms, and technology transfer among them resulting from the alliances. The firms taken randomly for this study are small and medium enterprises. |
