Abstract | For several years, Thailand has been perceived as a prosperous emerging market, with a sustainable 8% annual GNP growth. The recent Asian financial crisis has put an end to such economic results. But the miracle is far from being over! World-wide investors still trust in the enormous potential of the country. Structural adjustments are in fact needed to recover lost prosperity. Liberalisation is the way that has been chosen by the Royal Thai Government, deciding to re-emphasise on where the country is already strong; that is to say attracting foreign investors and developing its own industrial infrastructures by promoting an opened economy. Deregulation means here vast privatisation plans. Telecommunications, which remained a protected and strategic industry, is one of the main targets in the full liberalisation process. To anticipate the most probable scenario and to provide guidelines for all telecommunications actors that have an interest in the Thai market, this research consists of an analysis of the competitive advantages of the Thai PTOs, namely TOT and CAT, based on the assessment method developed by Piarabutr (1997). Only then it is possible to formulate reliable and practical recommendations for further implementation by looking at the feasible strategic opportunities for new entrants. The study aims at showing possibilities for partnerships and actions to take in order for the PTOs to survive in a new competitive enviromnent. |
