AbstractThis study has focused on carrying out a comparative study, developing an interrelationship among different flexibility types, and analyzing assessment methodologies for three important flexibility types namely, machine flexibility, product mix response flexibility and routing flexibility. A framework depicting relationship among the different types of flexiblities has been established. Several mathematical models have been developed to extend these flexibility-measures by incorporating more information about the system. Two models dealt with dynamic loading environment of manufacturing system have been proposed to measure the machine flexibility. A new concept has been proposed to measure product mix response flexibility. Routing flexibility has been measured incorporating the probability that an operation can be processed on a machine immediately while the originally assigned machine is not available. One of the performance measures regarding the effect of routing and machine flexibility has been studied through simulation (SIGMA) of KM/Mil and M/M/lqueueing models, to understand the behavior of dynamic loading environment of the manufacturing systems. The observations foun'd have been further validated to a large-scale flexible manufacturing system.
