AbstractConventional single-stage actuation cannot longer support 60% areal density growth in harddisk drives. The problem are that the voice coil motor ( VCM ), which drives the actuator, is located too far from the head transducer, which measures the head's position relative to the track and the flexible structure of VCM makes the positioning control difficult to be precise. Dual-stage actuation solves this problem by placing a second actuator closer to the head transducer. The main objective of this study was to design the second actuator called microactuator and simulate its mechanical performance to support the 60% areal density growth in hard-disk drives. The design is done by using Tanner Tool MEMs pro version 2 betal software. The results from the design based on this software are schematic representation which parameters from schematic are optimized in order to make the performance of microactuator which are resonant frequency and displacement satisfied the target value, and lay-out representation.
