AbstractThe study was on stability analysis of underground powerhouse cavern at Lam Ta Khong Pumped Storage Project. The cavern was located in siltstone and sandstone layers at a depth about 330m from ground surface. Actual measurement and previous numerical analyses were reviewed. Analyses by a more sophisticated computer code, named FLAC- 2D and EXAMINE-3D were made to investigate the effect of rock response from cavern excavation. New results were compared with those from previous study using different code, named PHASE. Comparison between analysis results from these computer codes and actual value was done, aiming to verify accuracy and appropriateness of each code. Results of analysis by FLAC showed reasonable agreement with results from PHASE. Effectiveness of rock strut is observed from results of analysis by EXAMINE-3D. FLAC did not give advantage in this study when compared to PHASE.
