AbstractNam Yuan Dam is 49-meter high zoned dam planned for construction across the Nam Yuan River, at Phayao province, Northern Thailand. Engineering geological mapping of the dam site was carried out. The dam will be founded on an interbedded metasedimentary sequence of metashale and metasandstone. Part of the sequence is slightly metamorphosed from the effect of highly tectonic activities. Laboratory tests were conducted on matashale, phyllite and metasandstone core specimens for determining physical properties, strength and modulus of elasticity. Two systems of rock mass classification, the Geomechanics classification and the Q-System were used to classify rock mass quality. The quality of rock mass encountered in the project was classified as fair, poor and very poor rock. Some rock mass properties such as deformation modulus and strength parameters were approximated. Support system for diversion tunnels was estimated. The tunnels rocks are likely to respond in the form loosening, revelling and high groundwater ingress which could cause loosening and rock fallout resulting in deep overbreak and problems in support.
