AbstractThis study focuses on the development of a practical applicable hazard zonation for a 4 km2 large area in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. The area is known to produce significant debris in the main Hohwaeldibach torrent due to large-scale mass movements and significant number of soil slips. The geology of the area consists of flysch (marl, sandstone) and includes a cover layer of colluvium of considerable thickness. In the southern part of the research area, the Northern Helvetic Nappes (Limestone, Marl) are outcropping. Small-scale old as well as fresh sheet slides, rotational slides and lateral erosion along the channels are main instability indicators and debris producer. Largescale mass movements of different depth are covering significant parts of the research area and contributing to the accumulation of mobile materials in the torrents. Intensive fieldwork was carried out and various engineering geological site factors were taken into account to analyze the field condition. The collected field data was transferred using ILWIS to create a landslide inventory map. These procedures led to the production of a primary landslide hazard map of the area. With the data available, amount of debris, which can be mobilized during heavy-rainfall events, has been estimated. The actual hazard map for the catchment area has been set up.
