AbstractThis thesis presents the methodology of the estimation of the slope stability for which seismic force is dominant factor. In general, parameters required to evaluate the stability of slopes are predetermined based on a deterministic approach, but it can not take into account the effect of the variance associated with rock properties on the stability of rock slope. In order to cope with the problems associated with the uncertainty of rock properties, a stochastic approach to rock mass, which models parameters are required to design the rock slope as random variables, has been focused on this analysis. The probability of failure is evaluated by using the Monte Cairo simulation technique and/or the first order square moment method. Also, this thesis adapt the concept of seismic hazard estimation, by using the seismic hazard curve to take into account into the effect of a ground motion on the probability of failure of slopes. In details, annual probability of failure, risk analysis, and theory of decision-making consider are adapted to consider the best alternative based on importance of structures, locality associated with the seismisity, and life of earth-structure. From this thesis it has been found out that performance, locality, and life of structure are very important factors for evaluation the slope stability. The methodology, presented in this thesis, has efficiency for decision in geotechnical work.
